Our Story

Located on the Kleinrivier Lagoon. Two hours south-east of Cape Town.

For over half a century, adventurous spirits have sailed across the Kleinrivier lagoon to visit the abandoned ‘Spookhuis’. Some camped on the grassy shore by the old stone homestead and told mischievous stories on moonlit nights. Today, the building stands resplendent once again in a glade of ancient Milkwood trees.

STAY WITH US: We have four delightful self-catering cottages, across the expansive lawn, inviting you to stay and soak up this dazzling site, less than a two-hour drive from Cape Town. The properties are set along one-and-a-half kilometres of unspoilt shoreline and 1 000 acres of indigenous fynbos and strandveld, that backs onto the Walker Bay Nature Reserve in between Hermanus and De Kelders.

Our clubhouse is now located in the historic 1892 Spookhuis, serving breakfasts and light lunches. To make your life so much easier, after a long drive, you are able to pre-order dinner dishes, braai platters, and breakfast baskets to be delivered to your cottage. Picnics and deli items can be arranged and bucketloads of activities are footsteps away. To crown this all we are just a ten-minute drive, down a dusty track, from the beautiful, quirky country village of Stanford.

Break away from the rigours of life and stay on an estuary teeming with birdlife and birdsong...

Things to do during your stay

You have the difficult choice of being active or doing absolutely nothing. The air is pure, the water clean and the scenery spectacular. You do not need to venture far to get your dose of fresh air and there are a variety of walks through the fynbos, along the shoreline or to the pristine beach of Walker Bay. SUPs, kayaks and quad-biking are also available.

We are located on one of the most important estuaries for birdlife, with over 200 species recorded, so we suggest you pack your bird-book and go exploring. On your walks you will discover many tracks of mammals too from porcupine, honey-badger, caracal and bushbuck and, if you are lucky, the more elusive Cape Clawless Otter and Cape Leopard (and caught on camera).

Or maybe you simply feel like soaking up the scenery with a glass of wine, or unwinding with a book under the milkwoods along the shoreline. As luck would have it, our thoughtful neighbours have a pampering spa where we can arrange treatments for you. What more could you ask for?
