About Spookhuis Cottages
Formerly Mosaic Cottages
For over half a century, adventurous spirits have sailed across the Klein Rivier lagoon or travelled the old oxwagon road to visit the abandoned ‘Spookhuis’. Some camped on the grassy shore by the old stone homestead and told mischievous stories on moonlit nights. Today, the building stands resplendent once again in a glade of ancient Milkwood trees.
There are four delightful self-catering cottages, across the expansive lawn, inviting you to stay and soak up this dazzling site, less than a two-hour drive from Cape Town. The properties are set along one-and-a-half kilometres of unspoilt shoreline and 1 000 acres of indigenous fynbos and strandveld, that backs onto the Walker Bay Nature Reserve in between Hermanus and De Kelders. The views over the Klein Rivier Lagoon and the mountainous backdrop are mesmerising.
Lagoon Bistro is now located in the historic 1892 Spookhuis serving light lunches. In addition to served meals you are able to pre-order delicious breakfast baskets, dinner dishes, braai platters, organic produce and homemade baked goods to be delivered to your cottage. Gourmet picnics and deli items can be arranged and bucketloads of activities are footsteps away. To crown this all we are just a ten-minute drive, down a dusty track, from the beautiful, quirky country village of Stanford.

Things to do at Spookhuis
To experience the Cape Whale Coast is an experience to savour. The air is pure, the water is clear and the scenery is spectacular. Enjoy a wealth of activities at Spookhuis and in the wider Stanford and Hermanus area, from coastal walks winding through the fynbos and along on the beach, mountain biking, sailing, kite-surfing, canoeing and whale watching in season.
Or maybe you simply feel like sitting back and taking in the scenery from the comfort of a sun lounger with a glass of wine, or relaxing with a book under the milkwoods along the shoreline. As luck would have it, our thoughtful neighbours have a pampering spa where we can arrange treatments for you. What more could you ask for?
What some of our guests have to say
Finally have a breather to just say THANK YOU for a wonderful function for Chris’ 50th! It was amazing. Our family and friends had a super time! Everybody wanted to stay longer. Your venue and hospitality stole many hearts on Saturday and won you many future patrons that will come and support Spookhuis.
Wonderful place out in nature, away from the hustle and bustle, but with lots of activities, beauty and comforts. We enjoyed very good service from Latiswa and her team and had a lovely weekend. We did notice that some of the garden and pool aspects had slipped slightly since our last visit but hopefully the new owners will address those small details. We highly recommend it.
Amazing place and staff are just so awesome and accommodating. Really made us feel at home.
